breathing problems
Posted On 04/17/2008 00:36:45 by Danette

I was wondering if anyone else has problems with chi breathing when getting over excited. My chi is about 2 1/2 years old and since she was a baby she sometimes can't get her breath when she gets over excited, almost like an asthma attack, I have to hold her and calm her down when this happens. It scares me when this happens anything that I can do to help it?

Has anyone had that surgery done on there chi.? How much is it? I feel for my toy chi. every time she has the attack. I don't want her to suffer when she starts playing with us or our other dogs anymore. The vet. couldn't guarantee that the perscription medecation would cure the problem.

My oldest female chi does this and at times will almost pass out. She has  rather bad tracheal collapse attacks and has since she was about 8 weeks old and now is almost 4. We just gently massage her throat and talk to her. The vet can give you meds if it is needed but the only real cure is surgery to replace the rings that hold the trachea open.

I have two chi's and they both make the reverse sneeze sound.  I really don't know why but when they run and play alot is when they do it.  I always pick both of them up, which usually causes a fight (lol) and I try to calm them down so they will stop and it always works.

interesting, i'm glad i read your blog, along with those who responded.  my chi is only 9 weeks old, we're newbies to all of this small dog stuff, but at least now i know, should this happen with ours, not to freak out, and calm him down first, then maybe, take him  the vet and see what he says.  Our has  made a horiffic honking sounds, when he's fallen off the bed, and when he doesn't get his way.  the first time we heard it, we thought he was injured, and we paniced, and started crying, but thank God, he was fine; later, he did it again, when he couldn't get his way  now we're not so terrified, and we just stay calm, and comfort him, and he's fine.

Yes, it is a common problem among Chihuahuas. It is a Tracheal collapse. It can be serious at times because they are not getting propper airflow. If you are worried you should contact your veterinarian. I know that most of the time we can just pick up our Chihuahuas and calm them with soothing voice control. Most of the time it is anxiety related. A veterinarian told us if it persited due to excitement to hold his or her nose to force breathing through the mouth. Yeah, hold an overly excited Chihuahua's nose. We just calm them down by soothing speech. Goodluck,  TripleFfarms

Please visit my new website that I made last night and tell me what you think. I would love some feedback and suggestions.    www.tripleffarm.com

Both of mine do that when they get overly excited.  It is distressing to hear, but we've kinda gotten used to it over time.  It sounds more like "honking"?  It's like a "reverse-sneeze". For some reason, chi's just do this.  I don't know why, but it usually only lasts a few seconds.  We just stop playing for a minute until they calm down and it stops.  Apparently it's not serious but if you think you should see your vet about it, then do so, just to make sure there is nothing else going on.

My Chi will be 3 on May 26 and she does the same thing when she gets over excited. I am curious to see what others say. Hopefully someone will reply soon?
