Is your Chihuahua litter boxed trained?

My Chihuahua's were housebroke by crate training, but with my new litters I have started training them to use the litter box also on top of going outside.

I was curious to know how your Chihuahua is trained? Outside, puppy pad, litter box or are you still in the process of housebreaking?

We pad trained our chihuahuas, but now they like to go outside as well.  A caution here:  my husband decided to save money by putting down newspaper with large white terry cloth wash cloths over them in the trays.  I think he got the wash cloths in a big bundle from Sams or Cosco.  Anyway this was to save money cause the pads got expensive and we empty the poo off the wash cloths into the toilet and wash them like baby diapers.  Anyway, now the huahuas are used to going on "terry cloth" or to them any soft cloth.  We have Pergo and tile on our floor.  If we go to a motel or hotel or grandma's house, they will consider a throw rug or soft carpet or bath rug fair game!  They have been trained that anything soft to their heiny is for poo or for wetting.  Also, they aren't totally good about using the pad.  If my smallest chi decides she needs to go and the pad is across the house, she will find a closer spot, and then her sister will go on top of that.  They are rather stubborn.  They were littermates and will be 8 May 18.

I would love to litter box train my two chi's. How do you go about that? Is it just like a cat where you put them in the box a couple of times? One of mine will go outside and the other will sometimes use potty pads but is scared to go outside. He does not always use the pads though, so I am looking for a better way.

Our puppy we trained to go in a litter box, but she wouldn't go in a box of "dirt" so my dad tried shredded newspaper and that did the trick.  Back in the day we didn't have "puppy pads" and had to use old towels, but pretty much she went where ever she felt like.  But the shredded newspapers worked wonders.

My chi is trained to jump into a tray that is lined with puppy pad that way she an signify the jumping into the tray with the action of having to pee or poops.  She also goes outside- she prefers outside over the tray and only uses the tray when we are not home or in the middle of the night.

Echo is outdoor trained. Whether its cold or not, he'll take care of his business in hurry if he has to, before he gets the chills.
