Hello, We are a first-time Chi owner which we just got a couple weeks ago. The vet just took skin scrappings from a few small bald patches on little Dax's
belly and found Demodectic Mites. Our vet said he got them from his Mom and they aren't contagious to us however because he is so small she can only offer lime-sulfer dip. I read that this doesn't kill this kind of mite. I've also read about Ivermectin and a heartworm medication Inceptor (I think is the name) which cure this type of mite. Yikes! I'm hoping for any advise and previous experience anyone has had with this problem. Thanks,

Oh my gosh, I'm sorry to hear that. Please be very careful what you try as these litle darlings are highly sensitive to everything. You might try pennroyal; gets rid of fleas. Welcome to the community!

Is the demodex localized or generalized?

His mites are only in a few spots currently. Although I noticed another spot on him today. After researching and talking with the Vet again, she suggested SufOxyDex shampoo which contains Benzoyl Peroxide and Sulfur. I really like our Vet. She's open to looking into any suggestion I find on the web and admitted up front that she needed to research more before giving him anything because he only weights 2.4 lbs and as was mentioned in an earlier reply, he is delicate.
Originally she suggested a Sulfur/lime wash which she didn't feel would cure the mites but would comfort and prevent a secondary infection until he gains more weight and improves his immunity. When I talked with her about a site I found suggesting a solution be mixed of borax and hydrogen peroxide as well as another comment regarding success using a benzoyl peroxide acne gel, she looked into it and suggested the shampoo. I haven't used it yet, but will tomorrow.
If anyone has any other experience I'd be grateful. He's so little and we're having a hard time house training, aggressive and biting, this is the very last thing he needs. He is very loved by us so no matter what he's family now. |

Missy had that as a pup too. Our vet. gave her ivermec and a topical cream that I had to apply once daily. She hasn't had any problem with this since then. She was 12 weeks old at the time of treatment and is now 3 years. Good luck!
