I was wondering if anyone else had problems with chi's having problems breathing when they get over excited? My chi has sometimes when she gets over excited starts having problems breathing, almost like an asthma attack, I have to hold her and calm her down when this happens, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated, thank you......Danette

Pedro my male gets that way...he snorts alot and even snores at night, the vet told me to give him 1/4 tsp of benadryl for every 5lbs every 6-8 hrs if needed. Hope that helps.

Thank you I will try this, its getting allergy season, and I don't think that is helping any.

Are you sure what he's doing isn't just reverse sneezing?  All 3 of my chis do this periodically.

Hello! Little B.B. has the same attack when she gets excited. My vet told me to hold her and massage under her chin until she calms down. I also noticed that if I sing to her (becasue I have a horrible singing voice) she gets distracted and stops. The distraction I believe is the key. My mom uses the distracted method to make her stop. Hope this helps!

Hi. My little Lili suffers from this. I brought her to the vet because it freaked me out a little. Sounded like an asthma attack.  She said it is a collapsing trachea. It happens a lot with smaller dogs. Their trachea looks like a vaccuum cleaner hose with those round ridges and occasionally they collapse into themselves and pretty much stop the flow of air.

Sounds scary, but the vet said that if it doesn't happen like 3-4 times a day, then she is okay. Just watch her. If it gets to be more pronounced then you can use benadryl.

I notice Lili gets it when she is excited or drinks her water too fast. Just massage their neck and they are good as gold.

Hope this helps.

this is called reverse sneezing. It is very common in chis. When my babies have an attack i very calmly talk to them and rub their throat. Another thing that works is to divert their attention like when my babies hear the work cookie or lets go bye bye the get very excited. When one of my chis has a attack i just say one of these lines and they quickly stop
