How long does it take a chi pregnancy to show?  My female is 5 lbs and the male is 3 1/2 lbs and it will be their first litter. They were tied July 3rd and 6th.  I have alot of experience with english bulldogs, but not with chihuahuas.  The mother is long haired, so will I need to shave her belly right before she is due?   Thanks for any advice.

Anyone up here by me? I need a boyfriend for my two chi's.  Both are in heat right now and I either need a stud for next time or I need to buy one.  Any ideas?

The usual gestation period for dogs is 60 days.  Count forward from the first tie up and you should get a general time to watch.  She'll start wanting to nest, so she'll build one.  Her behavior will change markedly and when u think she's just acting funny, then is the time to start watching for the babies.

Yes, but it's better for the dog if breeding doesn't happen until the 2nd or 3rd heat cycle. By the 2nd or 3rd the dog is 1-1 1/2 years old and is mature. A pregnancy on the first heat is harder on their little bodie because twice the energy is being expended. 1) the dog is still growing 2)the babies are consuming energy.

Ok here are a few suggestions that has worked for me...
1. its 57-62 days of gestation for a chihuahua.. the average is 60 days but depending on her activity level and how many babies it might take less or more by a few days.

2. Start saving some money to get everything you need. for example you could invest in exercise pen kennel for her to ween the puppies and give birth it will give her privacy and let her go in and out when she wants

Also have a calender and keep a daily diary of what you fed her. You might need it for the vet check up which should be held at least 20-30 days into the pregnancy so you can verify her pregnancy and how many puppies if possible.

Get at least one baby (kitten/puppy ) bottle can be bought at walmart for less then 3 bucks.. this is incase your chi doesnt have the energy to feed them or wants them. even dogs can have post pardon depression. use baby formula or the puppy one which ever is cheaper.

keep miss prego from jumping off of high places as she might harm herself or the puppies.. pretty much treat her like a human preggo... just her pregnancy will go fast.

if you have an android phone there is an app called PET CARE SERVICES ... its an awesome app it gives you info of all the local vets and so on.. so if your vet is not available and she gives birth at night in an odd hour you can contact someone to walk you through it.. also look up a  lot of you tube videos to see what you can learn if you dont know.. hope that worked or helped some.. you will be a great grandma i am sure of it.... you did the first step of asking for info and thats more then a lot of people do so thats awesome

I just want to suggest not feeding a puppy infant formula, puppy formula and infant formula is nutritionaly different from eachother, they sell puppy formula at all petstores, vet clinics, and walmart!

And yes u should clip her belly so the puppies can have easier access to her teats. And I think you can start to see a difference in her size if she is having a large liter by three weeks, but otherwise you should see by week five! :) Good luck!!! How exciting!!! :)
