I just got our chihuahua about a week ago...he is 14 weeks and VERY tiny...he weighs 3.5 lbs.

The breeder that we got him from, trained him on newspaper, and I am excited and proud to say that he s house trained to go pee outside, BUT he refuses to go poop outside, and because he is so tiny every morning my husband and I have to search for any evidence of poop (which is getting extremely annoying)

I've tried to use puppy pads, i've tried newspaper...I've tried everything!

I live in Canada and realise that it is going to be a hassle to get him to go outside during our extremely cold winters.

I would love advice on how I can convince him NOT to go inside and to enjoy being outside (which he hates) or even show him what puppy pads are for.

Thank you so much in advance!  It's a little frustrating! (and I thought training a 2 year old was hard)

Y'all are expecting way too much too soon...they are babies and accidents have to be expected.  You need to get these pups on a strict routine. THe best way to potty train is crate training.  Short of that, you can try the umbilical method (tethering the dog to you when not crated so you know where it is at all times).  These pups need to be on a strict potty schedule.  If the dog potties & you don't catch it in the act, then clean up the mess and move on.  If you do catch the dog, immediately scoop it up & place it on the pad (or outside) and give the command to potty.  If he/she doesn't finish the job, then it's up to you to watch the dog closely (if not crate training) so it can't do it's business in an inappropriate place.  Most toy breeds are more difficult to housebreak and many do not "really get it" until they are at least 6 months old.  Expecting a 10wk & 14 wk old toy breed puppy to be totally housebroken is placing far too high expectations on the dog.

Thank you.  I don't really want to crate train, but I took your advice and am trying the umbilical method.  So far so good.

Hi,

I have an 11 week old Chi who we are training to use both the puppy pad and to go outside.  Sure, we have accidents but it seems that most of them are our fault..... didn't take him outside when he woke up, after he played, after he ate.

I don't expect miracles that's for sure.  I work from home so Nitro (the Chi) goes in the basement with me but he's in a pack-n-play with his puppy pad, food, water, bed and toys.  He actually does VERY well using the pad when he's contained!!!!

It IS harder than having a child.  EVERYTHING goes in his mouth, he's a stinker going outside because he LOVES being outside and playing in the grass.  I do love it when we settle down at night and watch TV though.  He's on my lap with his blanket, sleeping.

I love my Chi!

The only time that Channing bites is when someone is burping the baby and he takes serious offense to it.   I say the same thing "easy Channing...that's not nice."...he just looks at me and walks away, but keeps a close eye on who's holding aher.

I'm having issues with him chewing everything...I woke up this morning, brush my teeth and couldn't find the cap for the toothpaste...surprise, surprise my daughter found it in the dining room...I won't talk about my new nike sandals, or my new down filled pillow (yes there were feather EVERYWHERE),  or my daughter's socks.  It's crazy what a little 4 lbs dog can get into.

We try not to get him all "wild" up after 7 pm...after the girls go to bed, it's considered quiet time.  Try playing with him 2 or 3 hours before going to bed, then by the time we hit the sheets he's all tucker out.  But I'm hoping that he gets over the "chewing faze".

I'll cross my fingers and pray for both of our sanities.

Boy do I know what you are all going through. Little Minnie Moo is 18 weeks and she does not like to pee outside. The poop is good and she does it outdoors, but not the pee. The biting is harsh, especially on the toes. I will work more with her on the pee but I hope she learns sooner than 6 months!

Nice to see ''Im not the only one with these similar problems; especially since I'm new to Chi's.  I love my little guy, and he goes outside really well, but refuses to go on the we pads, inside.  I have him crated, but only when we have to all go out(I live with my folks, I'M 17) and he's fine with that; I even put a pad on one side of the crate, but he won't go on it.  I live in a hurricane state, and so I really just want him to be able to go inside, on pads, when necessary...

Update:

I'm happy and proud to say that after our first snow/cold day...Channing did his business outside.  It did though take a little pursuading, but he did it!  We are going on 3 weeks with no accidents, but I will a little worried about when the snow hits, but he did it.

After I let him in, I praised him HUGE and you could tell that he was proud of himself.
