My little girl is 1 year 1 month and about to have her 2nd heat, I'd like to breed her with my new chi, he is only 9 weeks old at the moment, so I have a while before anything will happen. So this gives me a little while to do a little research. I have been reading stories on the internet that chihuahua's are prone to having c-sections, this scares me, and not only for the huge vet bill. I really would'nt like me little girl going through something so tramitic. I have also read they are prone to more problems during pregnancy, like eclampsia. also they might have more painful births than bigger dogs and pass out then might not bond with there pups and could kill them. Would like to hear from anyone with good and bad experiences. Thank you

While I cant tell you not to worry and really I have no experience with those conditions. I do breed chihuahuas and I have 3 females and I recently had litters by all around the same time, I have never had any problems. My girls are around 4 to 5 pounds and I wouldnt recomend breed any females smaller then that and you have to have a male smaller then your female. And make sure your there when its time for the babies to come. And if you have any other questions feel free to ask me.

Thank you for the advice, I am not sure what she weighs in pounds, we weigh in kilograms, when it comes time I will have to weigh her and see, then check on internet for conversion to pounds. Not sure if the boy will be smaller, I think he will be, will have to wait till he grows a bit. She is on heat right now, so I am not sure if in about 6 months (when she will be due again) if he would be old enough to mate, as he will be just over 8 months. thanks once again, bye for now.

usually males can reach sexual maturity at around 6 - 9 months old so he may be able to make babies at 8 months old

I haven't beeing doing this as long a Chihuahuamommy but I have had 2 litters. My first litter was in March of this year, Bella had 4 puppies, the first 2 were born at home and the last 2 had to come c-section. My second litter was just born yesterday by c-section. Now don't start to worry yet, let me tell you the story... Dori was
diagnosed with a diaphragmatic hernia 29 days into her pregnanacy, we had no idea there was anything wrong with her until our vet done an x-ray to determine pregnancy. For Dori there was no choice but to have a c-section, the stress from labor could of been to much on her heart. Had we known she had this condition we wouldn't of let her get pregnant. This was something she was born with and had never given her any trouble and probably would of never been found if she hadn't gotten pregnant. I have several friends who breed Chihuahuas, one who as done this for 30 plus years and in that time she has only had 4 c-sections, the other has been breeding Chihuahuas for 13 years and has never had a c-section. I've just recently found out that you never want your female to be more than 5 to 7 pounds or less than 4 pounds and your male should never be more than 3 pounds, the reason is the larger the mommy and daddy the larger the puppies and the more chance you have for having a c-section. Hope this helps... :0)

A larger female is alright as long as you breed her with a smaller male. Wee is 11 pounds and we bred her with a 6 pound male. She did just fine in labor, although she was yelping at me when I got in the shower. She was getting ready to push a puppy out and I was in the bathtub-bad mama, lol!

i let my dogs have c-sections
it's less traumatic for them just make sure to wake them her as early as possible so that they'll get acquainted otherwise, she might eat her pups during the pregnancy, make sure that she gets calcium, vitamins, and lots of protein |

I am so happy I found this site!!! Chihuahuamommy..you are so kind...
I am a first time breeder. My girl is 2 years old and in her 4th heat. My husband and I have bred labs so we have some experience. I have been looking all over the web for some good advice when it comes to breeding our little daughter.... I became so discouraged, it seems every page was someone who considers themselves a breeder...and they pretty much just tell you horror story after horror story....like if you breed you are an iresponsible pet owner. It was so refreshing to find this site, and be treated with respect. Some breeders just think they are the only one in the world that can breed a Chihuahua!!! I appreciate everyones helpful answers..I now more at ease, and more prepared when my girl becomes a mamma in the next couple months! THANX!!!!

Well Barney is nearly 6 months old and Bella is 17 months old and she will be due to come on heat soon, and he is already a big boy, he likes his food. She is longer than him has littler feet and head than him, and he weighs more, so I'm concerned for her, and would like to know if anyone has breed with the boy being a bit bigger.
