To Spay or not to Spay

Jan 20 2010, 10:51 pm - By Bambi

Our Chihuahua named Bambi is now 10 months old and are undecided to have her fixed or not.  She just finished her first heat a month ago and we have no other dogs around her.  Would it be to our advantage to have her fixed or let her remain natural?  Thanks

Hi,
If you don't want puppies from her, it's good for her to be spayed! But you had enough time to take a decision, she is so young! I spayed my girls at 4 and 9 years, after three litters from both of theme.

Thank you for your response and I think we will wait for a few months.  Our biggest surprise is they must keep her boarded for 2 nights and not sure if we could be without her that long.  We read that if she remains natural their entire life, there is a chance she may develope tumors later on?

Yes, it's true, that is better for her to be spayed. But you have enought time for that:)!
Enyway, Bambi is so sweet!

We lost a dog to an ovarian disease because we didn't have her fixed.  It's must safer and healthier for the dog.  I highly suggest it!  And it's always best to do it before the first heat.  Since she's already had hers, the sooner the better.  Read up on the advantages... you'll see 2 nights away from her are worth it.  And call around to other vets.  We never had to leave one over night.  But I've never owned a chi, so maybe the size of the pup is the difference.  We'll be getting our first chi in 7 weeks (just born).  We will definitly have her fixed as soon as she's old enough.

Thank you for the info and we have decided to have her fixed by another vet we went to who said Bambi will only be there for one night, 9AM one day and pick her up the next day at 12PM.  We also discovered the county we live in helps out financially for having dogs fixed.

Great news! I think you'll be very happy you did that.  Let us know how she does!
