I hae a couple of experienced breeder friends that say 5lbs.-6lbs is a good size...I know one of them has bred a 4 and 1/2 lb. but none smaller than that, that I know of.....My Cocoa is almost 5lbs. and I hoping she hits 5lbs. because I would like to breed her.....

Hello, I am a breeder and breeding is not for the faint of heart. So many things can go wrong. The size of your female is not as important as the genetics behind her and the genetics behind the male you will stud with. It should be well researched long before you decide to breed.

Lucy is pushing 5 lbs. now at seven months. I bought her with the intent to breed her. I use to breed shar-pei on thier second heat at about a year and a half old, I am not sure with chihuahuas. Lucy's mother had four litters of four and five pups without any problems but I have to say I am very nervous about this small breed. I absolutley adore them but I am scared about breeding. I have found a good vet with x-ray in the office, I would really like to find one with ultrasound. i know she stills has alot of time to grow and fill out. Any comment about the size of the male to use.

My Butterscotch (5lbs) got with my Tojo (2 3/4 lbs) during her first heat cycle. She became pregnant, she had an ultrasound 3 weeks before the puppies were due and there was 2-3 puppies. Two weeks later her ultrasound revealed all the puppies had died in utero. I will NEVER let any animal of mine ever get pregnant again. It was awful she almost died. She had to have an emergency hysterectomy and everything. I think everyone, except breeder's that breed for bettering the breed, should think twice before they breed any kind of animal. Just wanted to let you know what happened when mine got bred accidentally.
