My babies have some nasty breath, I love the kisses, but sometimes they are quite unbearable!! I brush their teeth every couple of days, and give them treats designed to freshen breath. Any other suggestions? One of them has worse breath than the others!

Bad breath is not only a sign of dental issues, but also a symptom of poor digestion. I believe you also posted about finicky eating as well. Sometimes its just a matter of finding the right food (but you walk a fine line here as you don't want to create a finicky either either). I would suggest checking out one of many Natural Balance formulas. I prefer all grain free and I feed their sweet potato/fish formula, though my foster girl hated it and getting her to eat was difficult. We visited some friends who fed the NB Ultra Premium formula and she gobbled it up, so now that's what she gets.
Try adding some pure pumpkin and yogurt to the food. The pumpkin is great fiber (and filler) and the yogurt has the active cultures to help aid in digestion. You can also go to your local health food or Whole Foods Market and buy some Jarro's acidipholus capsules and begin slowly adding those to her food. This in one of the best probiotics on the market and reasonably priced. |

You can also buy a product called Petz Life gel/spray (both available) it is a little on the pricey side. I bought it for my chi and have been using it since October 11th and seeing HUGE HUGE HUGE results in the plaque on her teeth and her stinky breath. I definitely recommend that product -it's working for me
I was also told that there is a product called Leba III (if i remember correctly), which is very similar to the Petz Life from what i understand, same price, same results etc.. The only reason i chose the petz life over the leba III is that i could not find the Leba in stores near me. |

My Chihuahua puppy had awful breath when we first got him. It smelled like death! His feet were also red on top from him licking them. (Staining from internal yeast infection).
I was feeding him Eukanuba because that's what he came to me eating and I wanted to wait a week before switching to a new food. So as soon as I could, I switched to a holistic food like my adult Shih Tzu eats. Within a week his breath went from smelling awful to completely neutral- no smell at all. Within a couple of weeks the yeast cleared up and he no longer has paws with red fur!
I definitely recommend feeding a holistic food as opposed to Eukanuba, Iams, Science Diet and others with junky ingredients. |

My Butterscotch's breath is fine but my little Tojo his breath is unbearable. He is my rescue, that is really a sick little dog, he is hydrocephalic and has blindness as a result. Does anyone know if his breath could have anything to do with his illness? The reason I am asking is he and Butterscotch eat the same diet and everything. When he gives me kisses I have to hold my breath, literally because his is so bad. He is so loving. I took him to the vet and he had 3 baby teeth when I got him that were still in his mouth and he was 7 months old so the vet pulled them. The vet says his teeth looks like he is 2-3 years old and the lady I rescued from said she bought him 5 1/2 months before and they told her he was 8 weeks old. I really don't know how old he is. Just wanting some help for his breath.

I have to give on update on Peanut. Starting last week his breath has gotten terrible again! I'm hoping that it's because he's teething and maybe the teeth that are falling out are making the smell. It's so gross!
Stephanie- I've read that illness can definitely cause bad breath. If you google it you should come up with some info. Hope that helps. :) |
